My illustrated quote is about how art is like air. Without air, without art, we would no longer exist in this world. I developed a quote that conveys this thought, “Art is Air, Light and Free- and Couldn’t Live Without it.” simple statement of what it is and the theme Water soluble crayons worked well for this piece because I was able to get lighter values to convey a softer mood. media
I wanted to create an image that would make people really feel that idea, so I decided to make an angel underwater, swimming up to get a breath. I used the image of an angel because for me, angels represent something perfect and pure. I also decided to view the image of the angel from behind to create the idea of anonymity. The angel could be anyone and represent a variety of things to a variety of people- just like art.symbolic meaning The angel is also swimming up to get a breath because I feel that if I don’t take time give myself time to create art, then I will feel like I am drowning. personal insights
organize my work, I used a border in my square format and placed the quote on the left, inside two large air bubbles that resemble quote bubbles on comics. fully describes your art and thought process I was really inspired by the sophisticated letting styles of Art Nouveau, so the fonts used for the quote are elegant and vary in size to create variety principals of design and help to emphasize certain words. principals of design On the right side of my asymmetrical composition, art vocab I placed an angel with feathered wings and a halo, viewed from the back, swimming to the top of the border. Under the angel are a variety of different colored seaweed, and several pieces wrapping around the border, similar to the organic shapes and flowing images of the Art Nouveau style. content The bubbles are repeated, smaller in scale, not only in the water, but also in the circular holes in the vegetation. The bubbles and holes all vary in size and help to unify the piece.principals of design I used a soft color scheme of blue, pink and green to convey a sense of lightness, which fits the theme of air. The dress of the angel is a light pink, which contrasts with the gradated blue of the water. When I was done painting the image, I realized that the border was plain white, and needed something. personal insights I realized that the air needed to be shown, so I added a sunset sky with white soft clouds and floating feathers, which added to the harmony of the piece through the repetition of the wings of the angel.
I really feel that the combination of these images convey the meaning of the quote and show how I need to take time to create art. That if I don’t, I will feel like I am drowning in everything else. Art is my air, it lifts me up, makes me feel free, and saves me. symbolic meaning
